Kalkgeröllhalde

Here, the disruption is extreme in terms of vegetation. The stones are constantly moving, rolling over each other as new ones arrive regularly from above. The surface of the scree remains unstable, dry, exposed to the wind and sudden temperature changes. Below, a finer substrate provides a more stable and humid environment. In this constantly changing environment, only the most adaptable species survive.

Some develop long, flexible stems that are able to squeeze between the rocks each spring, after being buried under the winter debris. Their roots, resistant to stretching and shearing, cling firmly to the smallest gaps. In a few more stable places, other species settle, their roots clinging to the rock.

These pioneers pave the way for life. The scree slopes are also home to a discreet fauna: reptiles, insects and even a few birds take refuge there, enjoying the warmth, the gaps and the absence of predators. A mineral world... but very much alive!
